Almost Home Joan Bauer 9780670012893 Books
Another tremendous book by Joan Bauer!! Life has handed 12 year old Sugar a plateful of hardship--a drunken, gambling, mostly absent father, a fragile mother, and homelessness. But this young lady had a grandfather who instilled in her a sense of hope and determination that is present is all she does and says. A creative and caring teacher encourages her use her gift of writing to express herself while also providing a stable sounding-board, even when a cross country move separates them physically. Like all of Bauer's books, resolution is satisfying, but not perfect which will resound with those who object to the more unrealistic, fairy tale ending of other titles in this "sad-happy" genre. Librarians and teachers should put this one, along with others by Ms. Bauer, into the hands of students who need to find some hope in their own lives as well as those who need to find some sympathy for others and gratitude for their blessings. "Almost Home" is a must-read for students in grades 5-8. I read this one on my Kindle and highlighted so many uplifting sections that need to sink into the hearts of readers and stick with them during the rough times that are inevitable for all.Tags : Almost Home [Joan Bauer] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Almost Home Joan Bauer 9780670012893 Books Reviews
Best reading for young girls
Good book, my only caution is for sensitive kids. It is about a girl who has a rough go for a while and ends up homeless for a good portion of the book. This book addresses some serious issues like depression and alcoholism. A deep but interesting and entertaining story.
On 7th grade Summer reading list. Has received good reviews.
I have this 3 stars bc I have such mixed reviews. While I think it’s a great book and well written, it was also incredibly sad and depressing and upset me.
Beautifully written novel striking at the heart of the struggle of a teenage girl trying to fit into a foster home. While the subject matter is difficult, it is appropriate for middle school students.
Kids loved this story. Super story demonstrating that becoming homeless is a tragic event for everyone involved. Great for discussion and gave some of the kids “permission” to talk about their own hard times with less fear of discrimination or misunderstanding.
My 9 year old granddaughter is reading Almost Home in school and suggested I might like it too. So I started reading it just to please her and to my surprise found it charming, touching and beautifully written.
I kept marveling how the author managed to appeal to a fourth grader and her grandmother both. Well done!
